I had the chance to play at Troon North for the second time and decided to play the Monument Course. Troon North contains two 18-hole courses (Monument & Pinnacle) and both come highly rated for public courses within the state of Arizona. The course is a pure dessert course set in the mountains of Scottsdale which provides for some scenic holes and views.
Hole #1 (called Hidden Green) is a 411 yard slight dog-leg right par 4 and visually is a tough starting hole. With a slight breeze into my face this was a long hole and a par is a really good score.
The signature hole on the front nine is #3 (called Monument) which is a 544 yard dog-leg right par 5.
A very unique feature of the hole is the huge boulder that divides the fairway/landing area off the tee shot.
Starting the back nine, hole #11 (called Dynamite Ridge) is an uphill slight dog-leg right of 504 yards. The starting point for the tee shot is over a grouping of large rocks to a blind landing area that slopes severely from right to left.By far my favorite hole on the course is hole #16 (called Lone Mountain) which is a 234 yard downhill par 3. By the end of my round the a severe cold front had come into the area and the wind was blowing approximately 30mph (directly into the tee). Off of the tee I hit the best driver of the day and with the wind gusting so strong it took all of that to get to the front of the green.
The greens fees at the course are a little pricey (which is expected during peak season in Arizona), however I would highly recommend to anyone looking for a true dessert golf experience with severe elevation changes. This was the second time I've played the Monument Course and is the only course that I've played in the Phoenix area that can provide the elevations changes similar to Tucson (which I am a huge fan of).
